Eutopia

Museum M, Leuven, Belgium

20.10.16 - 17.01.17

curated by: Joeri De Bruyn and Ward Verbakel

Thomas More's Utopia is at the origin of a long tradition of utopian thinking on architecture and society. Although utopia does not tend towards its realisation - the ideal city exists only on paper - it is one of the most effective instruments for challenging our society and giving impetus to new ideas. As for ‘paper architecture’, it is a space where designers have total freedom. What would a utopia look like if it were open to others and to foreign countries? Shouldn't good architecture be a little utopian?

The utopian projects in the exhibition are based on the book by Thomas More. Now 500 years old, this book contains a series of themes that are still particularly relevant today, such as the relationship between borders and identity, the debate between surveillance and privacy, the stimulating power of the community, and the expansion of the ideal city through the use of our information technologies.
