Cycle text

The 16n project cycle explores the way information can describe architecture as a correlation in between space / events / movements. It is the conjunction of number and computational theories with architectural ones.

The 16n project cycle thus confronts architectural concepts (congestion, flows...) with spatial sensing technologies (electromagnetism, infra-red ...) and its constructs (signal propagation, field theories...) ...through the means of programmed 'lumino-kinetic' devices. The cycle unifies projects ranging from architecture (framework _ 2007/2008), urbanism (binary waves _ September 2008), to landscaping (t.field _ 2009/10)

The cycle title 16n, n! = factorial number, refers to number theory (probability and combinatorial) and the hexadecimal number system used in information technology which, due to its easy permutation to the binary system, is at the core of information theory. From this viewpoint n! stands for multiple permutations referring to the combinatorial number system and the multiple scales and dimensions the projects of the cycle are based on.

Conceived as a modular infrastructure the different projects are all basd on networks of interconnected nodes. The networked structure itself is a communication and computation system, propagating in form of light and sound, the events it inhabits. Presence and motion create and alter the transmitted data, and propagation of this data becomes a space-time parameter.

Consequently the 16n cycle is the exploration of new architectural and urban objects based on system and number aesthetics, in this case the hexadecimal, by taking advantage of spatial and networked sensing technologies.
